Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the world.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of the most important structures in Islam. Which is also known as ‘Masjidul Aqsa’. Aqsa Mosque means distant mosque. It has been used as the first qibla of Islam. Although the mosque is owned by Muslims, it is geographically occupied by the illegal state of Israel.
History has it that after the construction of the Holy Kaaba, Hazrat Yaqub (AS) built the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Later, under the direction of Hazrat Dawood (AS), Hazrat Solaiman (AS) rebuilt the mosque. Earlier it was called ‘Baitul Makdas’. In the Holy Qur’an, the mosque is named Al-Masjidul Aqsa. In terms of sanctity, Masjidul Aqsa is the place after the Holy Kaaba and Medina Sharif.
It is narrated in the hadith that Muhammad (peace be upon him) came to Al-Aqsa Mosque from the Holy Mosque on the night of Miraj and ascended to heaven. Aqsa Mosque is not a single mosque. Qibli Mosque, Marwani Mosque, Karim Mosque, Borak Mosque and Qubbat Al Sakhra Mosque; The Masjidul-Aqsa consists of these five mosques.
Right in the middle of the mosque is the ‘Dome of the Rock’. Sakhra means stone. It is one of the three blessed stones in the heart of the world. The mosque, built on 27 acres of land, can accommodate 5,000 people for prayers at a time.
Muslims believe that since its construction, it has been used as a place of prayer for many prophets, including Jesus (pbuh). The mosque underwent a major overhaul as control of the Aksar Mosque changed hands more than once. The Baitul Makdas Mosque was rebuilt and expanded during the last Umayyad Caliph Abdul Malik.
Jerusalem is one of the holiest places in Islam. Many verses of the Qur’an refer to Jerusalem, as mentioned by early Islamic scholars. “Jerusalem” is also mentioned many times in the hadith. The Aqsa Mosque located here is the third most revered mosque in Islam; And this has been mentioned in many medieval inscriptions. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “A person gets a virtue of 50,000 when he prays at Masjidul Aqsa. (Ibn Majah, Mishkat). This is one of the three places mentioned by Muhammad (SW) for religious reasons, the other two being the Masjid al-Haram and the Masjid al-Nawawi.
